I don't think this has been discussed before, but what is the order of the tracks on the double album. Was there an official order before it was cut down to a single album? And what order would you put the tracks in?
I looked up the album on Wikipedia and this is the track order it gave:
Side A
Secret Messages – 4:44 Loser Gone Wild – 5:27 Bluebird – 4:13 Take Me On and On – 4:57
Side B
Stranger – 4:27 No Way Out – 3:28 Beatles Forever – 3:50 Letter from Spain – 2:51 Danger Ahead – 3:52
Side C
Four Little Diamonds – 4:05 Train of Gold – 4:20 Endless Lies (1983 Version) – 3:26 Buildings Have Eyes – 3:55 Rock 'n' Roll is King – 3:07
Side D
Mandalay – 5:19 Time After Time – 4:01 After All – :56 Hello My Old Friend – 8:33

That's it, here is a backup source, http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/jtkt1119/secret.html, and I agree with Jerry that this would be one of my favorite E.L.O. albums when restored to a double album, if not already!

On side D, I'd put "Rock n Roll Is King" first ; "Beatles Forever" second ; "Time After Time" third and leave "Hello My Old Friend" as the final track. I honestly hope that we see the official release of this album someday.

To ELO fans alone this would be a real treat. However, I can see why the double album idea was quashed as there is a bit too much filler for the average fan- Side B looks particularly weak.

I actually think the proposed Sides C and D are the weakest, in particular Side D (with the obvious exception of Hello My Old Friend).

I think Hello My Old Friend would have fit better on Time because of the whole time travel concept, which is what the song is all about anyways.

But then that would make the "proper" S&M album even weaker than it already is IMHO.
The expanded Time Remaster album, enhanced with 3 excellent extra tracks, could only be improved with the removal of one track.
No prizes for guessing which one.

I'm not sure I'd want a double-album secret messages. I agree that sides's C and D look rather weak, perhaps why it was never released as a double album as Jeff knew it wouldn't be good enough.
I'm not sure that in it's released state Secret Messages is a weak album. Sure it's not classic ELO but I find it rather addictive (with the exception of 1 track) and rather dark.
I like it.

| Good to see that Jeff's instincts were right about this. It was bad enough to endure sythesized dog bark for one occasion only...a protracted SM listening experience would have been too much...even for MOM's ears.

SnM-ELO's Goth album-which I can't resist writing off at every opportunity .

Cutting Secret Messages was apparently not Jeff's decision. And I, for one, would absolutely love a completely remastered Secret Messages with all 18 tracks. This album (in its two record state) was not bad for its time. I don't think there's a weak side at all. Jeff managed to create a different sounding record while keeping the ELO essence.
As far as Beatles Forever is concerned, you really can't go by the crappy sounding version that's circulating among the fans. It may not be Jeff's crowning jewel, but it's better than that version we have suggests.

The planned would have been really great. The D- side was totally cut- off. What a shame. It was the best one !

That last side in particular would have been my absolute favourite - even if it does include Time After Time. I can only begin to imagine what it's like to hear the shortened version of After All crossfade into Hello My Old Friend by means of a three-second wind effect, though I could always put together a decent-enough fanmix... not forgetting the original reversed "welcome to the show" at the end, of course!
What a lot of people may be forgetting when they discuss any strengths or weaknesses in Secret Messages as a double album is that many alternate takes were used for the single disc and b-sides (as with After All), plus the Afterglow boxed set mixes that are crying out for a remastering treatment. Hopefully we'll get Buildings Have Eyes if that singles collection ever happens, but for now the biggest problem is surrounding Beatles Forever, a track once ironically being prepared as the first single before CBS put an end to the double album plans! Also, do we know for certain if Rock And Roll Is King would have still featured the "thank you for listening" intro, or if Four Little Diamonds had the extended clip from the Garden Rehearsals? Heck, do we even know the rehearsal clip actually comes from that mythical practice tape, or was it just a little studio banter kept in for whatever reason?
Back to the subject of Beatles Forever momentarily, a kind soul on this very message board has just brought my story regarding this particular song full circle by pointing me in the direction of a much higher quality copy circulating right under our noses for the last two years! Older, wiser and not one to further derail any plans for an official release, this time I won't be helping to distribute this superior recording as it's clearly not from the same convention source. While it's a long way from being audiophile-worthy (thanks mostly to very high levels of MP3 compression), I can now finally pick out Dave Morgan's brilliant Lennon-esque vocalisations, plus some truly stellar keyboard work from Jeff and Richard.
I realise the earlier bootleg would probably have circulated anyway regardless of my poor computer security and lack of knowledge when it came to file-sharing programs, but I still feel awfully guilty, even though in hindsight there's very little I could probably have done to stem the proverbial flow. Still, at least now there's a far better copy doing the rounds, and even if it's from the same source in comparison it's like night and day. Of course, the lack of crowd noises and much higher clarity (keyboards playing Beatles quotations! more audible background vocals!!) make this a revelation. In the spirit of Jeff's love for all things cryptic and mysterious, I'm only going to hint at where this one can be found...
CLUE: signature?
P.S. You know who - THANK YOU! At least now Beatles Forever doesn't sound as misplaced in my Secret Messages compilation!

For the record, here's the track/time list of what could have arguably been the CD version - it was on FTM's short-lived page about Secret Messages.
Secret Messages - 4:51 Loser Gone Wild - 5:17 Bluebird - 4:13 Take Me On And On - 5:02 Stranger - 4:30 No Way Out - 3:27 Beatles Forever - 4:30 Letter From Spain - 2:59 Danger Ahead - 3:47 Four Little Diamonds - 4:12 Train Of Gold - 4:22 Endless Lies - 3:35 Buildings Have Eyes - 4:04 Rock 'n' Roll Is King - 3:10 Mandalay - 5:20 Time After Time - 3:56 After All - 0:41 Hello My Old Friend - 8:37 (Welcome to the show outro)
And Chippa, if you figure it out before me (and you probably will), holla!!!

Does anyone make regular backups of the FTM pages, as I've heard there were several equally short-lived announcements regarding the on/off Secret Messages expanded remaster and other similar titles, including Armchair Theatre and Greatest Hits Live? As for the clue about where you can find Beatles Forever, let's just say there's a particular song on the album referenced in my signature (and no, I don't mean Secret Messages - that's far too obvious!) I hope will point you in the right direction. Also, I should just point out that within minutes of downloading the file I was able to make a few improvements to its quality, just as I did with the earlier version now doing the rounds. Of course, this time I won't be responsible for its more widespread distribution...

I nearly forgot to mention earlier - this new copy of Beatles Forever is definitely not just a cleaned up version of the previous source, as the outro has a complete fade-out missing the past recording's crowd noises (in reference to background sounds from the actual convention playback - any screaming was definitely Jeff's intention). Furthermore, the intro is slightly different, with two chimes now sounding more like one-and-a-half. Still, this isn't a poor edit but exactly how the beginning sounded on the acetate without being filtered through a video camera in a backpack. Of course, this means the rumoured alternate mix from the last test disc featuring a removed verse is still at large... though I'm starting to suspect a far better quality version of this new copy may also be in the possession of those responsible for this latest leak! Is all this teasing too much for you? Here's a follow-up to my previous hint:
A lyric starting with "hello" that isn't Telephone Line, possibly linked to No Answer?
